Named to Board to Advise SUNY Buffalo Law School’s Advocacy Institute

E. Stewart Jones, Jr. was recently named to the National Advisory Board of the University of Buffalo Law School’s Advocacy Institute – the law school’s newest signature initiative to train students to become the best advocates in the profession.

SUNY Distinguished Service Professor, Dr. Charles Patrick Ewing, who directs the Institute, recently said, “These board members are renowned in their fields, with outstanding reputations and accomplishments, and we are honored that they have joined us to help guide the Institute in becoming one of the nation’s top advocacy programs.”

Board chair, Terrence M. Connors, added, “In addition to some of our most prominent alumni, several non-alumni with no prior connection to the Law School, who are famous for their success in high profile cases – such as Barry Scheck in the O.J. Simpson trial, Bob Clifford, in the 9/11 case, and Stewart Jones, a top New York trial lawyer – are so enthusiastic about the current quality and vast potential of the Institute that they agreed to serve on its Board.”

SUNY Buffalo Law School

Since its founding in 1887, SUNY Buffalo Law School – the State University of New York system’s only law school – has established an excellent reputation and is widely regarded as a leader in legal education. Its cutting-edge curriculum combines a strong theoretical foundation with the sort of practical tools that graduates need to succeed in a competitive global marketplace. The school has a special emphasis on interdisciplinary studies and public service. It also provides opportunities for hands-on clinical education, making it unique among the nation’s premier public law schools.

Advocacy Institute a Key to Law School’s Training Programs

At a recent gathering at the law school, Dean James A. Gardner stressed that the Advocacy Institute was a key component in bringing the law school’s advocacy training programs under “one umbrella.” The idea, Gardner said, “was to create a more cohesive and cumulative training for our students to be effective lawyers and advocates.”

School officials note that the impact of the Advocacy Institute has been immediate. In the short time since the Institute was established, the law school has seen significant increases in the number of students applying for trial teams, the number of trial teams, the number of teams fielded at various competitions, and the successes of the teams.

Multiple Components to the Advocacy Institute

The Institute currently has a number of components:

  • Trial Advocacy
  • Appellate Advocacy
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Innocence & Justice Project
